Tawnya Morris

For the past 21 years, Mrs. Morris has served as President and CEO of the Abayomi Community Development Corporation, a faith-based nonprofit in northwest Detroit.  Her work in community and economic development has had a significant impact on thousands of youth and families in the metropolitan Detroit area.

 

Mrs. Morris helped in the planning and design of the New St. Mark Family Life Center where she served as project manager for building and construction.  She is currently responsible for the management, operations, and renovation of the facility.  This valuable community resource, although in Detroit, provides educational and recreational opportunities for all who visit.   It also serves as a business incubator for economic development and job creation.

 

Mrs. Morris is actively involved in her community, where she serves as a Councilwoman for the City of Southfield.  She has created collaborative partnerships between residents, businesses, and government that helped increase neighborhood revitalization efforts and property values. She also works to move the city toward equitable and sustainable development, while helping residents resolve issues and concerns. 


Mrs. Morris holds a Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan, a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and is a graduate of Southfield High School.  She has also achieved Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business – Growing the Minority Business to Scale Executive Education Certificate.  
 
Mrs. Morris is currently the Vice President of the Washington Heights Civic Association and is Board President of the Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation.  She is also a member of the League of Women Voters, Southfield Lathrup Democratic Club, Martin Luther King Jr. Task Force, Southfield Community Anti-Drug Coalition, NAACP, ACLU, National Community Reinvestment Coalition, and is a former board member of the Community Development Advocates of Detroit.

Danielle Hilliker

For nearly a decade, Danielle consulted with and led various nonprofit organizations through strategic planning and advancement. Hilliker served as the Executive Director with Life Directions, Vice President of Development and Communications with the Center for Success Network, Detroit Director with Read to a Child, Area Director for Special Olympics of Michigan and Executive Programs and Development Associate for the Michigan Womens Foundation. 

Through these ventures Danielle gained an expertise in strategically forming programs to gain public awareness and increased organizational funding. During her tenure with the Michigan Womens Foundation she was awarded an opportunity to participate as a fellow with the Cross Generational Women Leaders in Washington D.C., a program that partners young and senior women leaders on key issues at local, state and national levels. A very prestige accomplishment funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the fellowship only accepts five applicants a year. 

Danielle also served as a board member for Teen Hype (Helping Youth by Providing Education), an organization targeting educational development, solid peer and community relationships, and on the Diversity and Inclusion Council for Troy School District. With progressive leadership and fund development experience, Hilliker remains passionate about systemic change and focuses on issues of civil rights, social justice, equity, education, and diversity. Danielle holds a Master of Science from Spring Arbor University, concentrating in management organizational development and is currently pursuing her PhD in public policy and administration focusing on international nongovernmental organizations.

Ida Hendrix

Ida Hendrix joined the Joy Southfield Community Development Corporation in 2017.  She is responsible for managing the physical and administrative processes to support the safe, high quality and cost effective delivery of community development programs and services. 

In her role as Operations Manager, she oversees financial transactions, employee 

payroll, donor receipts and work performed by various contractors.  Ida enjoys supporting the J-SCDC staff in achieving its mission of community revitalization.​

Ida brings over 30 years of operations experience to the Joy Southfield organization.  She oversaw the project to build the Motor City Exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum. After working many years in the automotive industry doing operations and project management, she transitioned to shopping center management. Ida was the General Manager of Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor for twelve years.  She retired from Briarwood and began volunteering in the Joy-Southfield community.

 

She is an active member of Second Grace United Methodist Church; the founder of the Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation.  A graduate of Michigan State University, Ida enjoys creative projects and sewing. 

Tiffany Bell

A newcomer to the JSCDC Team, Tiffany is no stranger to Joy-Southfield CDC having worked alongside with Covenant Community Care for the previous 5 years as a Clinic Manager.

As Manager, Tiffany was able to identify and eliminate barriers for better healthcare and provide resources for residents in our community. Her  experience includes organizing focus groups within the community for positive change, championing for 

uninsured/under-insured by providing quality healthcare to those who need it most and organizing volunteer opportunities for the medical team at local businesses to name a few.

Tiffany’s goal as Director of Health and Wellness is to educate and empower youth and families by providing opportunities that support a healthy lifestyle; Combining her passion with community involvement, allowing others to take control of their health, both physically and spiritually. Building upon and striving to provide the ability for all to bring about positive change in our communities through volunteering and awareness.

Tiffany is happily married and a proud mother of two beautiful children.

Community & Economic Development Fellow

Title: Community & Economic Development Fellowship

Description and Duties:

Support JSCDC’s mission to revitalize the Joy Southfield community by acting as the organization’s catalyst for the development and delivery of programs to:

Stabilize the neighborhood, reverse the deterioration of quality housing and increase access to quality, affordable housing for low-income families

Empower and support community residents in overcoming barriers to healthy living related to local community & economic conditions

 

Thejobentailsbeingresponsibleforthefollowingrangeofactivities:

 

  • Lead in the implementation, administration and management of community development and housing programs

  • Oversee multiple volunteer driven based home repair and renovation projects

  • Recruit, cultivate and manage volunteer resources from the immediate community and Detroit area faith-based organizations

  • Locate and recruit partners and collaborators from business community, government, and other community-based organizations.

  • Work with Executive Director and Fund Development Committee to prepare proposals to fund community and housing development programs

  • Effectively outreach intoJoy-Southfield community to identify and recruit participants into community and housing development programs.

  • Locate construction and banking firms within the JSCDC community that are willing to work within boundaries and are sensitive to the importance of successful housing development in the Joy Southfield area.

  • Locate youth and family development program partners that are willing to deliver services within the Joy Southfield area.

  • Advocate on behalf of community residents and program participants

 

Needed skills:

  • Strong personal communication skills- ability to network and effectively connect to diverse range of persons in a variety of settings (community, religious and corporate).

  • Self-starting team player. Ability to work with minimal supervision and within a team environment.

  • Subject matter expertise in housing(e.g.low-income home ownership programs, home rehabilitation and repair, personal finance).This skill is highly desired.

  • Subject matter expertise in youth and family development programs. 

  • Skilled at advocating on behalf of low-income and at-risk persons

  • Good writing skills–ability to lead or assist in proposal and report preparation

  • Strong leadership skills–ability to organize, inspire and mobilize volunteer workers and community partners

  • Excellent organizational skills, such as time management, project planning, tracking and maintaining community and volunteer contacts and documenting project outcomes.

  • Basic knowledge of contract interpretation and administration

  • Basic knowledge of computer-based tools(e.g.email, wordprocessing, etc)

Liz Etim

Market Manager

Liz is a Certified Farmers Market Manger and joined Joy Southfield as the Sowing Seeds Growing Futures Farmers Market Manager in 2017. 

 

She brings years of experience in food access and education working in Detroit Community Development.

Her focus is to bring vendors, health and wellness educators and family friendly fun to the farmers’ market community of Cody Rouge. 

She has a lifelong passion for growing plants from seed, with a Certification in Horticulture from Michigan State University. Although she’s a California native, she’s called Michigan home for over two decades.  

Chef Mike Teasley

Professional Chef

Chef Mike is a native Detroiter.  His passion for being a chef began at the early age of 13 when he identified his call to cook.  A graduate of Murray Wright High School, Chef Mike also attended Breitharpt Career & Technical Center and received a Culinary Arts Occupational Training Certificate graduating Cum Laude.

A belief in nutrition, moderation (portion control) and exercising are the back-bone of of Chef Mike's beliefs and primary keys to staying healthy.

In addition to his schooling, Chef Mike began to self-educate and hone his culinary skills while working at various locations such as the Tide Water Grill, TGIFridays, MGM Grand and the State of Michigan Department of Corrections to name a few.

Beginning as a volunteer at JSCDC, Chef Mike continues to volunteer his time and culinary services at the Sowing Seeds Growing Futures Farmer's Market and Healthy Eating Activity & Learning Program where he prepares and cooks meals; distribute healthy food samples and conducts food demonstrations.

Chef Mike believes that culinary cuisine is not just a style of cooking but an individual preferred choice of food.  He enjoys and gets excited about teaching and helping individuals in the community in getting hands on experience in cooking different dishes and making better food choices for improved health.
